Excursion to Wartburg Castle

On 23.10.2024, a group of pupils from the International Schools Reinsdorf went on an excursion to Wartburg Castle in Eisenach. Wartburg Castle, founded in 1067, is one of the most important castles in Germany and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1999.

The castle is known for the fact that Martin Luther translated the New Testament into German here.

At around 7:40 a.m., two coaches packed with children set off for Eisenach. The journey took around two and a half hours.

Once there, we didn't have to climb the stairs for long before we arrived at the castle gate. We were then divided into two groups, which visited two stations in the castle one after the other.

The first stop for our group was in a small chamber, where we were led in through a small side entrance. In the castle, which among other things had an old letterpress, we also saw a doll dressed in the clothes of the time.

After the briefing, we were all given clipboards with three sheets of paper with tasks on them. There were over ten stations where we could solve puzzles with tablets and find out more about life at the castle and Martin Luther.

We were also allowed to print a motif of the castle ourselves using the old letterpress machine and write our names in pen and ink. Once we had finished, we began our tour of the Wartburg. We were taken through various rooms, including the bedroom, the living room, the dining room and the church with an organ.

One attraction was the outhouse, which was considered a luxury at the time, but looked primitive to us today. It was also cold and uncomfortable.

Wartburg Castle was also the home of Elisabeth of Thuringia, who lived and worked here from 1211 to 1227. At the end of the tour, we spent some time in the castle courtyard, where there was a stall selling ice cream and other food.

In the end, we made our way back home on the two coaches. However, we had a traffic jam on the highway, which meant we had to drive for three hours. However, the time passed quickly as we sang funny songs and had a lot of fun. We arrived back at SIS Reinsdorf at around 5:30 pm.
